The League Cup is not only a competition, but it's a battle between teams by which they make each other better in their own skill in that specific game. So, fellows, today we are going to talk about the Leagues Cup.

Well, many of you who didn't know about this before are there. This article will be a fully detailed post about the Leagues Cup so that you can understand everything about this event. In this article, we will explain the history and format of this event. So let's begin our talk about this.

What is the League Cup?

Teams from the two top soccer leagues in the world Liga MX in Mexico and Major League Soccer in the U.S. and Canada compete each year in the Leagues Cup. The U.S. and Canada play host to it. Four clubs from each division made their debut in July 2019. With a final held in Sin City on September 18, 2019, the inaugural event was a U.S.-hosted single-elimination tournament.

The Leagues Cup is a truly inclusive competition, serving as a CONCACAF regional cup for the top division leagues in Mexico and the United States, including MLS teams situated in Canada. It was expanded to include all clubs from MLS and Liga MX. Regardless of nationality, the top three Leagues Cup clubs earn a spot in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, where the victorious team advances without a match.

History of this event

Before we delve into the history of the Leagues Cup, it's essential to understand its significance. The North American SuperLiga, which ran from 2007 to 2010, saw teams from Major League Soccer and Liga MX compete.

Both leagues also send teams to the Campeones Cup and the CONCACAF Champions League, where Mexican teams have excelled. The two leagues started preparing an eight-team, binational competition in 2018 to go along with the Champions League and give Mexican teams something to play instead of the Copa Libertadores.

In March 2018, MLS and Liga MX announced their collaboration to create the Campeones Cup and explore other ways to have competitions between their teams in both countries.

The birth of Legueas cup

The Leagues Cup event was announced on May 29, 2019, and the first season will have eight teams and take place in the summer. Some soccer fans in the U.S. didn't like the idea of the competition and called it a "cash grab" for American clubs.

The MLS Players Association was also worried about the event because it would make schedules more crowded in the summer. Later, it was stated that the final would be held at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

ESPN and TUDN (formerly Univision Deportes Network) were given the rights to broadcast the tournament. This event was also shown on T.V. in Mexico on Televisa and in Canada on TSN and TVA Sports.

MLS, Liga MX, And other team

MLS and Liga MX stated in July 2019 that the second Leagues Cup would take place in 2020 with 16 teams, eight from each league. The top four teams in each conference that don't make it to the CONCACAF Champions League would be in the MLS.

The 2019 Apertura champion, the 2020 Clausura champion, the 2019–20 Copa MX champion, and the following five best teams in the league would be in the Liga MX.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was called off on May 19, 2020. In 2021, the Leagues Cup, which took place in August and September, had eight teams for the first time. The Mexican team, León, beat the American team, Seattle Sounders F.C., in the final at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Seattle Sounders F.C. was the first American team to make it to the finals of the tournament.

A showcase for the 2022 Leagues Cup was announced by MLS and Liga MX on April 14, 2022. It began on August 3, 2022, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. There were two games at the event: Los Angeles Galaxy played C.D.

Guadalajara, and Los Angeles FC played Club América. Leagues Cup Showcase got three more games on June 30, 2022. F.C. Cincinnati would play C.D. Guadalajara at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio; Nashville SC would play Club América at Geodis Park in Nashville, Tennessee, on September 21; and Real Salt Lake would play Atlas F.C. at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, on September 22. The events were a one-time replacement for the 2022 Leagues Cup, which was supposed to happen but didn't because of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and other events.

When the CONCACAF Champions Cup gets more prominent in 2024, the Leagues Cup will be used as a way for North American teams to qualify. Starting in 2023, all MLS and Liga MX teams competed in the Leagues Cup during a month-long break in their own seasons.

The winners went straight to the round of 16, and the runners-up and third-place finishers each got three spots in the Champions Cup. Lionel Messi scored a lot of goals to help Inter Miami C.F. win the first event of its kind in 2023.
